Tom's music career began in Tempe, Arizona, where he was a founding member of the short-lived, but highly regarded Spiny Norman Band.

After returning to Chicago he began building a reputation as a funny and literate singer/songwriter.

His songwriting heroes include the great John Prine, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Steve Goodman, Jesse Winchester, Jimmy Buffett and Don Henley.
